Iyyapan is the son of Thangam and Thambrati. His
father, Thangam is employed as a coolie (day wage laboror).
Iyyapan's mother, Thambrati, attended school until the seventh grade
and is a housewife. Per month, the family receives a salary of
1500-2500 rupees. Iyappan is currently able to eat, drink,
brush his teeth, bathe and dress independently. His receptive
communication includes the ability to point out objects in a book
upon request; he is also able to express his feelings and desires in
complete sentences. He has been placed in the functional academic
group, which focuses on expanding conceptual knowledge and providing
pre-vocational training. Assistants are also currently working
towards helping Iyyapan improve his memory and social skills.
