July 2010: Syed Ali Fathima attended Madarasa school for Muslim religious studies from 2007 onwards, after completing Gr. 12. She received complete support from ASSA, under the sponsorship of Ramani & Suman Ramakrishnan. The family had applied for support from the Tamil Nadu Govt., which has come through as of June 2010. Both her brothers have grown up and are employed in decent jobs and are contributing towards her education, transportation and living expenses. However, her parents continue to bring her to ASSA regularly for physiotherapy and medical consultation.

Profile- Syed Ali Fathima  - Compiled by HCI volunteers visiting ASSA in July 2005

Syed Ali Fathima  daughter of Saithu and Sahulkamidhu,  is a quiet and thoughtful 18 year old.  Her father and her older brother are tailors and her mother runs their household.

Fathima started receiving funding from Handi-Care Intl. this year, sponsored by Ramani & Suman Ramakrishnan.  Before receiving this assistance, Fathima’s parents covered all expenses associated with her education, which she stated was an overwhelming expense for their family.  Her parents also took her daily to school.  Fathima’s father brought her on his bicycle.

Now under the care of ASSA,  which pays for her school fees, notebooks, school uniform, and transportation costs, Fathima feels confident of getting a decent education and further training.  Fathima has also received a wheelchair from ASSA, which she uses to move between classes.

Fathima is currently in Grade 11 and is an enthusiastic student with many friends.  She is studying English, Tamil, Commerce, Economics, Management, and Auditing, but her favourite subject is Tamil.  Once she has completed Grade 12, Fathima hopes to pursue a degree in computers at Amar Seva Sangam.

Observations about Fathima & family

Syed Ali Fatima was born into an orthodox Muslim family severely crippled in her upper and lower limbs. She is the only girl in a family of three children, and is despised by her mother. At the age of 16, she was taken to an alternative healer and was given treatment which made her condition worse. Her mother ill-treats her and sees her as a burden to the household. Her father is a small trader in the village and supports his daughter as much as he can.  Fatima is a bright girl who attends school and speaks out about her disability at school forums and presentations.

Unfortunately, Fatima requires constant care-giving, as she needs assistance in going to school, going to the bathroom, and other activities of daily living. Her mother stays at home, but refuses to assist her.  Her father helps as much as he can, constantly traveling between his workplace and Fatima’s school to attend to her needs.  He wants to enroll Fatima at Amar Seva Sangam, where he knows she can pursue higher studies and be rehabilitated, but Fatima needs a fulltime care-giver to assist with her daily routines. Handicare Intl. feels that we can lessen her family’s troubles by bringing Fatima to Sangam through a sponsorship. The donations will go towards paying for a fulltime care-giver and Fatima’s education.
