Nature of disability

Mentally retarded. He walks but does not talk. His vocabulary is limited to only a single word, Appa (father). Does not indicate his toileting needs. Does not eat on is own. Mother is only feeding him. Does not respond to his name (being called). He is withdrawn and has a blank expression.

Medical History

He was born in a Private Hospital. Delivery was normal. Birth cry was absent. Delayed milestones. The child was taken to C.M.C. Vellore for training at the age of 1 ½ years and the child started walking after 6 months of training.

 

Training methods adopted at Nesam.

Activities of daily living:

-He is being trained to eat on his own, by first giving assistance and slowly withdrawing help. He is trained to indicate his need to go to the toilet by taking him at regular intervals.

To improve his awareness:

-He is being trained to respond to his name (being called) and indicate his body parts by touch.

Educational Activities:

-He is trained to identify common objects and pictures. And to sort out objects by colour.

Speech Training:

-Blowing exercises are given to improve his speech. He is being encouraged to make various sounds in group play and group singing sessions. Scribbling, cutting a thick paper with a scissors and putting on clothes clips on a cardboard are given to enhance his finger - thumb opposition and finger coordination. 

OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

•    He is able to respond to his name and points to self when asked ‘where is Khadir’

•    On reminder, he goes to the toilet, removes his elastic pants and puts on the pants himself after urination.

•    He scribbles in a slate.

•    Points to body parts, head, nose, ear, eyes, hands & legs - on request.

•    He is able to make pieces of idly and dosai with one hand and eats. He needs support to eat mixed rice. When the mixed rice is placed on hand, he puts it in his mouth and eats.

•    Drinks liquids from a tumbler on his own.
