Nature of Disability: He is mentally retarded, unable to find his
left arm and fingers.
Medical History: He had a normal delivery. He was
diagnosed as mentally retarded and was
treated at the Government children’s
hospital in Chennai.
Training Given at Nesam School:
1. He had throat surgery at the expense of his school. The surgery was aimed toward his speech ability.
2. He is trained to move the tongue and to relax the jaw so that he can talk.
3. He is given physio-therapy exercises to stretch his arm and unfold his arms.
4. He can recognize some letters and numerals. He is being taught to write some letters.
5. The teachers demonstrate many objects and eatables and explain where to buy them.
6. He is being taught to write the different colours and he has acquired some sense of traffic.
7. The teachers concentrate mainly on his daily activities of life and to fulfill his basic needs.
Other Characteristics:
• After the operation and training, his drooling is reduced and he is able to attempt to speak.
• He is able to make his wants known by speech. He is able to communicate well with his communication board (alternative communication) and he is very happy about it.
• With physical training, he is able to make better use of his left hand. He is able to remove and wear his shirt on his own, making use of his left hand.
• He has learnt number concept up to 5 and he is able to identify rupee notes 1, 2, 5, 10 and 100. He is able to give the change for 1 rupee. He is able to make purchases in a local store up to 10 rupees without counting the exact change.
• He is able to write his name and address with 1 (or) 2 spelling mistakes.
• He is able to read and act appropriately in real life situations
• He is able to come to the school by walk (about 20 minutes) alone.
• He participates in all the vocational activities, like making envelopes, making wax candles, greeting cards, wrapping paper and make furniture.
