K. Revathi is 21 years old and comes from a small village called Sambavarvadakarai. Her father is a farmer and her mother rolls beedis She has three sisters, who earn their living rolling beedis and a younger brother, who is currently in school.
Revathi first came to Amar Seva Sangam in 2003 in order to receive an identification card for the physically disabled. This card would enable her to receive grants, scholarships, discounts for train and bus travel, as well as rehabilitation and access to any necessary appliances, such as crutches, calipers or a wheelchair. While at ASSA, Revathi enquired about the possibility of taking a computer course. She enrolled right away, and has been at ASSA since then.
Before coming to ASSA, Revathi had been living at home, commuting daily to school by bus. She recalls the difficulties of getting on and off the bus, as well as having to climb flights of stairs daily to her second floor classes. Since coming to ASSA, Revathi has been receiving extensive physical therapy at the Medical Testing Unit on ASSA’s grounds. She has noticed great improvements in her mobility since arriving and can now walk without any assistance.
Revathi has also progressed remarkably through a number of computer courses. She has completed courses in data entry, Tamil and English typing, general computer applications and C Programming. Next month, she will be starting a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Applications, which she hopes will land her a secure job in the computer industry.
Revathi is described by her friends as being a very strong student with extensive experience in computers and a strong interest in applying her skills to help others. While she has a desire to learn everything there is to know about the computer industry, Revathi also enjoys reading and singing along to the radio (though she was shy to admit this). And according to her friends, she has an enviable taste in clothes and always looks her best!
Revathi thanks her HCI sponsors for their continued support.
