Shiva is 22 years old and comes from Tirunevelli.  He grew up with his mother and one older brother, having been abandoned by his father at an early age.  Because of this, he faced constant scarcity that prevented him from receiving the care he needed to deal with his disabilities resulting from childhood polio.  He suffered damage to his legs and spine, which left him unable to walk without assistance.

Shiva came to Amar Seva Sangam in October of 2004, having completed high school in Tirunevelli.  A former student at ASSA told him about the Disable Youth Training program offered here.   He is now enrolled in the Bachelor of Computer Applications program, and has future goals to work in the computer industry, and perhaps to someday work abroad.

The program here has allowed him to pursue his academic and professional goals while receiving ongoing support for his physical disabilities.  He reflects on how much easier it was to stay in a place built to accommodate people with disabilities, where he receives regular physical therapy and medical care.  He has received the necessary aids, which allow him to move independently despite his permanent disabilities.

Shiva’s friends describe him as a very good-natured and friendly person with an excellent sense of humour.   In his free time Shiva enjoys listening to music, both Tamil and western styles.  Here at ASSA he has made many good friends, and he enjoys spending time with them.

Shiva wishes to express “again and again, thanks.”  Because of the support he has received from Handi-Care International he has found a place where poverty and physical disability do not prevent him from achieving his goals.
