Subbulakshmi has been at Amar Seva Sangam for one year and has seen great improvements in her abilities since she has arrived.  At the age of 20, she plans to begin a bachelor of commerce degree shortly as she has applied for the program. She comes to ASSA from the town of Thiruchitambalam and is the daughter of Thangapandian, a farmer, and Karuppammal, who is deceased. She has one older brother and one younger sister.

Subbulakshmi has a case of poliomyelitis in her right lower leg.  Although polio causes muscle weakness, she is able to walk without the use of assistance. She has taken numerous courses while at Amar Seva, including courses in MS Office, C++ computer language and typing to help her with her future degree program and job.

One key benefit of studying at Amar Seva Sangam is the ability to continue to participate in a daily physiotherapy routine.  She attends physiotherapy everyday for half an hour where she performs active leg strengthening exercises and gait training.

Subbulakshmi notes the great improvements she has seen in her mobility since she began coming to Amar Seva Sangam.  She says she loves the environment here because everybody is working towards the same general goal, which is, overcoming a disability while actively seeking a quality education. Those close to her add that she is an extremely caring friend and a very good speaker. Subbulakshmi also extends a “thank you very very very much to HCI!”
