Thangaappa has many aspirations and at 23 years of age it doesn’t seem like much can slow her down. She has been at Amar Seva Sangam since 2000 and has been working diligently towards future goals since she arrived. She is the daughter of Vairavan, who is an agricultural farmer and Ponnuthai who is a housewife. She has 1 younger sister who is currently studying and 2 brothers who are also in school. She comes to ASSA from the village of Karuvantha.
Thangapappa suffers from polio in her right leg. She is able to walk with the use of a caliper. She attends physiotherapy daily for half an hour and is working to improve strength in both her lower limbs, adjust her gait pattern and practice breathing exercises.
Thangapappa has completed a bachelors degree in computer applications and less than 2 years remaining to complete her masters of computer applications degree. She has previously completed courses in data entry operations, foxpro programming and typing in English and Tamil. Once she completes her master’s degree she wants to pursue a PhD in programming and then attain a job as a programmer or as a software engineer. During her spare time, she works at ASSA doing multiple jobs associated with data entry operations. This is a requirement by ASSA that all candidates contribute several hours of volunteer work as a means to get training and help the institution out. Her friends describe her as extremely hard working and a very good friend.
To HCI, Thangapappa says “Thank you very much for investing in my future and my abilities to learn and attend rehabilitation. I come from a poor family and I would not have been able to afford the training. You have really made my dreams come true. Please support my studies until I finish. Thank you.”
