What is HCI?

************************************** |
HCI - Handi-Care Intl., registered as a Canadian charity (Charity Registration # BN 889046397RR0001) in 1992, is ably administered by volunteers. Its Mission Statement is to
Rehabilitate, Educate and Empower disadvantaged persons of South Asian descent through raising awareness, effective partnerships and efficient fund raising.
HCI works with organizations that fulfill all the criteria it sets forth, with high expectations of commitment, reputability, accountability and efficiency. HCI funds these organizations for specific projects and works hand in hand with them to ensure implementation and to keep the project under check.
|
 |
Our Vision: To raise awareness about and Empower disadvantaged persons of South Asian descent.
|
 |
Our Mandate: Relieving poverty by providing housing and related facilities for people with special needs as well as people who are destitute, relieving suffering or disability including providing facilities for the care, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the handicapped and destitute, and establishing and operating schools including workshops for vocational training and rehabilitation for handicapped and destitute people.
|
 |
Our Goal: Accelerate our
support to NGOs in India who offer direct services to the poor rural
disabled, through sponsorship programs. Volunteer Youth Training (working with the target communities that HCI serves) and raising awareness regarding initiatives pertaining to disability in the Greater Toronto Area during the current year.
|
We strive to make this possible through education (educating and creating awareness in the community about issues relating to disability, dealing with disability, including prevention) and training (training Canadian youth volunteers to participate in local and international projects directly).
Examples of our "disability to ability" success may be seen in such cases as Siddik's:

How was Handi-Care Intl. born?
Handi-Care Intl. (HCI) was born as an
off-shoot of a major undertaking by 2 extraordinary young men. Both
S.Ramakrishnan & Sankara Raman are confined to wheelchairs with
crippling physical limitations. Their stories are given below. They
stand tall as examples of self confidence, determination, dedication &
unflinching commitment to their undertaking - to "Empower" the rural,
poor disabled - by building an organization from its grassroots to
educate, rehabilitate & give training in all aspects so as to become
independent & employable. The centre they have built -
AMAR SEVA SANGAM
(ASSA) is an unique establishment of unparalleled capacity. It offers a
comprehensive & total service package encompassing an entire array of
rehab work for an entire community of about 600 villages in a rural
developing area in Tamil Nadu, India. More about
AMAR SEVA SANGAM
can be found in their website (www.amarseva.org).
To date (Jan
2010), ASSA & the architects have won over 55 coveted awards and
recognitions, including President of India's award (twice), Helen Keller
award, "Super Idol" by CNN IBN, Best institution award from the state &
central Governments to name a few. Click here for a short concise
presentation about Amar Seva Sangam.
Handi-Care
Intl. was founded as a Canadian registered charity in 1992 by Sulo Krishnamurthy, who took a keen
interest in helping Amar Seva Sangam develop and to take on similar
other projects for helping the poor & needy. Since then HCI has
grown and expanded its wings to reach out to other organizations as
well.
Our Visionaries
*********************************************** |
|
Ramakrishnan, rendered quadriplegic at age 21, after a fatal accident, decided that he would NOT let his life go wasted and to do everything possible to help the disabled children in his village. Supported by his family & friends, he Started ASSA in 1981, the year of the Disabled. He started with 5 disabled, neglected children. He started teaching them and provided them with food & shelter. He realized that Education and Knowledge are the only keys to solve the problems of the disabled . From 1981-91, the organization had a gradual and steady growth under his tender loving care. His service has been recognized world-wide. Some of his accolades include the award from the President of India, "Man of the year" honor from the Week magazine etc. to name a few. |
 |
Sankara Raman, confined to wheel chair from childhood with Muscular dystrophy, is a brilliant Charted Accountant who had a flourishing practice by age 25. As a devout social reformer, having faced & successfully overcome several challenges, decided to join with Mr. Ramakrishnan to make a dream come true. Giving up his practice, he joined ASSA in 1991, only to revolutionize the whole rural community. His astute management skills, keen insight to tackle challenges, exceptional PR ability and inexorable drive to achieve the goal has seen ASSA grow multi- fold in just 6 years. Now ASSA is a Million dollar exemplary project, accomplished in all areas of Rural Rehabilitation, well on its way to realize, the Dream. Sankara Raman has been conferred with many awards and tiles including Ratna Shiromani award from New Delhi, India. |
