Volunteer Placements
******************************************************************

HCI has been placing volunteers successfully since 2003 at projects in South India. The response from both sectors have been greatly encouraging. Both the students and the organizations are mutually benefiting from this initiative. Placements run through the year. (Dates are flexible depending on circumstances). Applications are accepted all year.

Student volunteers gain valuable experience working with mentally and physically disabled children. We train and place enthusiastic and empathetic individuals willing to learn and give to those less fortunate. Our programs are extremely valuable for those with an interest in special education.

  • The benefits of volunteering in terms of the career / educational advancement of each volunteer is very significant. Each of our student volunteers has been able to enter the desired field of study - viz. Medicine, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy and other Health care related studies.
  • For some volunteers, who could not decide as to what area of atudy to pursue, volunteering with HCI, provided them with answers after working with our disabled children and gave them a focus on their future studies / career.
  • When these volunteers return home after the remarkable experience of living, giving and receiving from a developing country, they are able to contribute so much more to the Canadian society at large and their families and communities are that much enriched.

Education and Rehabilitation for Mentally Challenged:

Focus of Handi-Care Intl. is to help in the education and rehabilitation of physically and mentally challenged youth and children in India. To achieve this, placements with ASSA is set up.

English class for Disable Youth Trainees

Our volunteers help a special group of youth that have physical disabilities learn the English language.  This group of youth have already completed different levels of education and are currently receiving Vocational training in various trades such as tailoring, computers, typing etc.  In order for these disabled students to be competitive in the workforce and get jobs in their trades, it is important for them to learn English. Our volunteers teach the students spoken English, in addition to grammar and vocabulary.

Physical Education for Physically Disabled Children:

Our volunteers also conduct physical education and play time activities for the physically disabled children under the care of ASSA using physical education equipment and games purchased in Canada.

Counselling of Spinal Cord Injured Patients :

Our volunteers talk to the young spinal cord injured patients and try to offer help to fulfill thier emotional needs, play games, teach them simple computer games etc. They basically enhance what is already offered at Amar Seva Sangam with a new perspective.
