Gautham Krishna (Jul 10th to Jul 17th, 2024)
This past summer (July 2024) I had a wonderful opportunity for volunteering at Amar Seva Sangam, a special education/rehabilitation center for children with physical and mental disabilities in India. This center also has a school where children with physical and mental disabilities study along with normal children who require support socially and economically. This school showcases the concept of inclusiveness where disabled and normal children study together. This center also acts as a hospital for disabled children and other patients. I learnt about this opportunity when I volunteered for walkathon events for the past 2 years organized in Mississauga to collect funds for this center. The location of Amar Seva Sangam is at a rural village in southern India. When I first got there I was overwhelmed because I was seeing a side of life that is completely different from what I know of or experienced. At Amar Seva Sangam, I had an excellent opportunity to work closely with these children by teaching them English, playing games with them and helping doctors that take care of disabled children. I also helped doctors at the spinal injury recovery station and physiotherapy center. Volunteering at Amar Seva Sangam this summer has been one of the best experiences of my life. Despite the language barrier and different abilities, I discovered that I had a lot of things in common with these children and that truly moved and inspired me. I saw how children with different abilities were helping each other in their chores by forming caring/loving communities around them. Seeing the smiling faces of children and volunteers made me realise how to be resilient, hopeful and always be cheerful in life in spite of many challenges that we face. This opportunity also gave me a first hand experience of what it takes to live with a disability and made me understand and respect the different challenges that disabled people face. It has truly helped me see life in a different light and has shown me how much I have to be thankful for what I have and how naive it is to take for granted the things that are so easily accessible to us. I would like to thank everyone involved with the organization that helped me create a lot of fond memories and take back experiences to cherish forever. Looking forward to my next visit.
