The Volunteer India experience has inspired and guided many volunteers to choose career paths that involve working with people with disabilities. More than 40 HCI volunteers have all returned with raving reviews of their experience.
Clinical Placements for International students
Handi-Care Intl. (HCI) has been facilitating clinical placements for PT/ OT/SLP students in India since 2006 at our partner organization Amar Seva Sangam located in the rural town of Ayikudy in Tamil Nadu, India.
Professional volunteering as supervisors
In 2015, for the first time, HCI started sending Canadian OTs, PTs to India, along with Canadian OT, PT students. From 2015 to 2018, a total of 39 OTs and PTs, from Canada, USA and Australia, have volunteered at ASSA.
Volunteer placements are at an institution called Amar Seva Sangam (ASSA) in rural South India, which focuses on rehabilitation and education of disabled people through its school, vocational training centres, rehabilitation centre and medical clinic. Handi-Care Intl. has created unforgettable volunteers experiences for students (high school and university) and professionals in health care and education. Through these placements, volunteers build invaluable leadership skills, gain cultural insights, cultivate lifelong friendships, and have fun. They return home with new perspectives on international development and a focus on future career goals. Many volunteers have subsequently found careers in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, teaching and medicine. Handi-Care Intl. has been placing volunteers in India since 2004. So far, more than 40 Canadian volunteers have participated in our in various areas such as education, medical/rehabilitation, recreation, sports, computer related services, etc.
